And we survived 2012!

It is 21st December 2012 and it was supposed to be the day world ended, at least according to some predictions. But, on the contrary, you are reading my blog and you are a living part of the un-ended world! And now, all of those who may have watched the movie ‘2012’ may recall it with a sense of comedy as opposed to the fear and awe with which its storyline used to be recalled before 21st December 2012! While as the Mayan ‘prophecy’ has since long been, quite expectedly, treated with disdain by the scientific community on the basis of scientific and astronomical facts, the Islamic point of view on the subject is much more clear.
Without going much into the details of what actually the prediction was and what was its probability of coming out true, I will just focus on the approach we can adopt towards this kind of ‘prophecies’ as believers. First things first, the most intelligent person to have ever walked the surface of earth – Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) – when asked about the exact time of The Hour or The Doomsday declared his inability to answer. Instead of predicting any date for The Hour, he stressed upon two related things – the signs preceding The Hour and the preparation his followers ought to have before The Hour.
It is mentioned in the Noble Quran, “Surely the knowledge of The Hour is with Allah alone” (31:34). It is amply clear from this Quranic declaration why even the Prophet who was informed about every other matter through revelation was unaware of the exact time of The Hour. But, nevertheless, he did disclose a number of signs, the most by any Prophet, to his followers so that they reform themselves and refrain from vile and immoral living. The signs have been disclosed only for the purpose that we may reform our lives and not that we may attempt to deduce the date of The Hour by perusing these signs.
As mentioned in the book ‘Meaning of signs of The Hour, their importance and kinds’ written by Mufti Muhammad Rafi Usmani, the signs of The Hour are of three kinds with respect to time – The distant signs which have already manifest themselves in the past include; Mischief of the Tartars, The fire of Hejaz (and the Splitting of the moon which occurred during the lifetime of the Prophet). The minor or the in-between signs which have become manifest but are yet to take complete shape include; Chiefs of nations being hypocrites and immoral, The trustworthy being treated as cheats and vice versa, Wine, Interest and Bribe becoming acceptable under different names, Immodesty and shamelessness becoming commonplace, obedience of parents becoming a taboo etc. The near signs which would be very near to The Hour include; The coming of Mahdi, The emergence of Dajjal, the second coming of Jesus (PBUH), the appearance of Gog & Magog and the rising of Sun from the west!
It is our common experience that as our school/college exams grow closer, we redouble our efforts and hence our preparation is at the top. Anyone who does nothing more than contemplating and complaining about date sheets and romanticises with the date of exam gets hold of nothing but failure. The knowledge of the signs of The Hour is one of the basics a believer should possess. So, I thought it as my duty as a believer, not as any scholar, to pass this to my fellow brethren. And our approach should always be as pronounced by the Prophet i.e. we should be more concerned about the preparation (our way of living) rather than deliberating about the exact day, month, year or the century in which The Hour would come. Preparation matters, date sheets don’t!

Palestine – What does the new status mean?

This write-up first appeared in the Tuesday, 4th December edition of the Daily Greater Kashmir

In a historic vote, on Thursday 29th of November 2012, Palestine won its bid at the UN to upgrade its status from ‘entity’ to ‘non-member state’! This was  exactly 65 years after the erstwhile British Mandate of Palestine was divided into a Jewish state and an Arab state vide UN resolution 181. After Thursday’s vote, Palestine became the 194th ‘state’ to have, at least, this status. While most of the nations of the world voted in favour of the bid, The Vatican (also a non-Member Observer state) hailed the UN resolution. While as countries like China, South Africa and Pakistan co-sponsoring the draft resolution, the response of the US-Israel axis has been, expectedly, unruly. Though, in essence, this up gradation won’t bring about any drastic changes but it is a 2nd moral & symbolic victory in a row for the Palestinian people within ten days. Apart from the change in seating arrangement of the Palestinian UN representative, who will now sit beside the Pakistani representative ( as per alphabetical order) in the Permanent members benches, the changes which this upgradation might bring can be discussed under the following heads.
Related to Palestine itself: “Not much will change on ground” as the Israeli government was quick to react. The Palestinian diaspora will still require permits from Israel to visit their homeland. The collection of revenue and taxes, as presently done by the Israeli govt., will still be done by the Israeli govt. The capital of the Palestine, Jerusalem, will continue to be held by Israel. However, it will give Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas the much needed political life saver, particularly after the rival Hamas gained immense popularity (and legitimacy) in the International circles during the Israeli attack last week. Hamas, which is deemed a terrorist organization by both Israel and the US, gained political leverage over Abbas’s Fatah due to the visit of high profile Arab leaders like The Emir of Qatar, Egyptian PM as well as the Turkish FM and had given Abbas a reason to worry. Abbas can now triumphantly come back to Palestine with something to cheer about.
Apart from this,  the only appreciable change which this up gradation has brought is that it has enabled Palestine to seek membership of the different UN bodies and possibly strengthen its bid for the membership as a ‘state’ in the International Criminal Court (ICCt), which is not a UN body. However, it is highly unlikely that the Palestinian Authority (PA) will go to the ICCt to demand investigations into war crimes and assassinations orchestrated by successive Israeli governments. The European Union is the major contributor of international aid to Palestine and most of the European countries have warned the PA against dragging Israel to the ICCt, lest they stop the aid. Besides, the US has also warned to terminate all assistance to the PA should they go to the ICCt. The US has also legislated that it would close the Palestinian office in Washington unless Palestine resumes ‘meaningful dialogue’ with Israel, which stands stalled since 2005!
Related to Israel: Israel is going to polls in January 2013 and, I guess, this issue is definitely going to affect the results in a big way. This up gradation seems to undo whatever political mileage Benjamin Netanyahu had gained after bombarding Gaza last week. It was widely expected that the attack on Gaza would tilt the political balance largely in his favour but now the UN vote may affect his prospects in the coming elections. This was evident from his reaction to the UN decision which he termed as ‘not conforming to peace’. The rival Israeli politicians have already begun targeting Netanyahu for his supposedly weak policies. Former Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni who marked a re-entry into Politics with the launch of her own political party termed the Palestinian bid at the UN as a ‘strategic terrorist attack’ despite her being a vocal supporter of the two state solution to the Palestine issue.
Notwithstanding all these factors, this up gradation can be welcomed as a small yet significant step forward towards the settling of the Palestinian issue. After all, Switzerland also existed as a non-Member Observer State at the UN, for 50 years, till 2002!

Of Politics, Genocide & Solidarity!

“Where should we go after the last frontiers?
Where should the birds fly after the last sky?
Where should the plants sleep after the last breath of air?
The earth is closing on us, pushing us through the last passage,
and we tear off our limbs to pass through.”
-         Mahmoud Darwish

These few lines by Mahmoud Darwish, who was regarded as the Palestinian National Poet in Exile, aptly give an idea about the tragedy of the Palestinian nation. While as for Muslims in rest of the World the Hijri New Year Day heralded hope for a peaceful year ahead, these people were greeted with rockets and missiles (manufactured from the American tax-payer’s money!) on the very first day of the New Year. While as people in most parts of the world are voicing their concern in unison and criticising the offensive (read Massacre), the oppressor seems unfazed whosoever the critic be.
The present continual massacre of civilians in the Gaza strip traces back its root to the cold-blooded killing of a young Palestinian boy while he was playing football by the Israeli defence forces. After this, three more boys were killed in not much different circumstances. Hamas Military fired crude rockets (which hardly make a hole through concrete) in protest/retaliation. Then Israel assassinated Ahmed al-Jaabari (the Hamas military head) who was also the chief broker in negotiations for a lasting ceasefire. Being involved in such negotiations, he was under protection of a no-assassination pact with Israel at the time of assassination. And Hamas had to retaliate (any sane organisation would do that!) giving Israel a pretext for full scale offensive (read Massacre)!
In the midst of all this, one may have expected the much revered world body, the UN, to take effective measures to stop bloodshed. But this time as well, as on all previous occassions, the all-weather friend US ensured that even a weak UN doesn’t harm Israel’s interests. The US has so far vetoed not less than 42 UNSC resolutions (upto 2011) related to Palestine alone! This means, while all other members (non-Permanent ones included) of the UNSC favoured a resolution against Israel, US with its Veto Power ensured that the resolution wasn’t passed. With Russia openly accusing the US of filibustering the issue during UN Security Council deliberations, any immediate action against Israel seems a distant dream. Move over to Syria where Genocide is underway under the Assad regime, Russia and China leave no stone unturned to thwart any UNSC measure against Syria!
This reduces the role of UN to that of just a soap which cleanses dirt from one’s hands, in this case it absolves (cleanses) Israel of all the crimes by not taking any decisive action apart from issuing ‘warnings’! And even if the UNSC does pass any resolutions Israel has had an eventful history of ignoring these, having so far violated most of the 102 resolutions passed by different US bodies like UN Security Council, UN General Assembly and UNRWA. While as the war on Iraq was based on the moral high ground that it had breached a UNSC resolution, and talks about war on Iran are being revolved around the same thing, Israel still has the distinction of being the country which has violated the highest number of UN Security Council Resolutions!
While condemning the Israeli massacre of the Palestinian people in Gaza without mincing any words, one should keep in mind that we can’t blame the entire Jewish community of the world for the sins committed by Zionists in Israel. There is a pretty sizeable fraction of genuinely humane people among the Jews who unequivocally condemn Israel’s Fascist and Supremacist actions. I have seen on social networks that, in the process of condemnation, we go on to the extent of praising (and thanking) Hitler for exterminating the Jews of Europe during the Holocaust. By doing so, We, Muslims lose a large constituency of people all around the world who would, otherwise, support the Palestinian cause. I have myself seen people (on social networks, of course!) arguing that Muslims have no moral ground to condemn the Israeli onslaught as long as they are happy with the Jewish Holocaust! We are not a legacy-orphan nation, we have inherited the legacy of great Humans & Statesmen like Tariq bin Ziyad, Omar bin Abdul Azeez & Salahudeen Ayyubi among others in addition to the Prophetic legacy of the Noble Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) and His companions. Where does the need to patronise Hitler arise?
Another interesting fact here is that Bal Thackeray, the recently dead Ideologue of the Shiv Sena was a big fan of Hitler himself and patronised him. While Muslims take Thackeray as a sworn enemy for his tacit role in the anti-Muslim riots and all, the patronising of Hitler by Muslims seems by any means short-sightedness and narrow-mindedness. After all the friend of an ‘enemy’ doesn’t make a friend at all! And by any means, an oppressed nation fits better empathising or sympathising with another oppressed nation and not in being sadistic in other nations’ sufferings.
"…it was painful to listen to people who have suffered so much themselves, mock others who suffer, in different ways, but no less intensely under the same oppressor. In that slogan I saw the seeds of how easily victims can become perpetrators", writes Arundhati Roy in her book ‘Listening To Grasshoppers’ commenting on the action of Kashmiri protestors taunting the India’s poor with slogans like “Bhooka Nanga Hindustaan”!
In the present case, maybe the oppressor is not the same but their (Hitler's & Israel's) ideology is same - Fascist & Supremacist!

Are You a Kashmiri?

“Are you a Kashmiri?” was the question the boy, with whom I shared the cabin of the Sleeper class compartment of Sampark Kranti Express on my way to Delhi, asked as soon as I completed my two Raka’hs (Qasr) of Isha. I was kept guessing as to why should my being a Kashmiri take the credit for my religiousness but I preferred to continue the conversation. And as it turned out to be the whole family joined the conversation and as a mark of pride the boy began to show me photographs he had clicked on his trip to Kashmir a year back. Furthermore, they told me about their Kashmiri Pandit neighbours and their closeness to them as a mark of being close to and loving Kashmir and Kashmiris. And they even went a step further and offered me and my friends a share in their dinner which we politely managed to evade as we had already packed our bags with dining stuff. Probably, I felt pride for my identity and I got to know that there are still people who love us, love Kashmiris notwithstanding all the stereotypes! After this conversation I could say to myself that it was a good start to a journey which many students like me took in the past and returned ‘Framed, Damned, Acquitted’ in order of the mention! I felt proud to be a Kashmiri!

Next, I was waiting with two of friends at a Delhi Metro station and i noticed a angrezi man taking notes while he was standing in the queue. He had a wolverine style half-beard which seemed to me as atrocious a style as the behaviour of people while boarding or deboarding the Metro! I followed that man into the compartment and started the conversation. He happened to be a freelance journalist working for BBC and was reporting on Tourism. After introducing myself as a Kashmiri, he was pretty amused as were the other travellers in the metro who didn’t even blink at the sight of a Kashmiri boy-with-a-skull-cap interacting at ease with an English journo. He had been to Kashmir in 2010 and talked about the “tensions there” but admitted keeping himself away from political reporting focussing instead on Tourism only. After exchanging pleasantries we parted. He went towards the Baha’I temple and our next stop was Nehru Place.

Nehru Place –  a shopping haven for electronic goods was where a friend of mine had to get a laptop. After much haggling and comparison we finally settled for one! As the showroom owner was drafting the bill he started the conversation by addressing me as, “Khan Saab! Kashmir se ho?”! He  then enquired about the ‘situation’ in Kashmir and about ‘terrorism’ in Kashmir. The T word struck like a bolt from the blue but I maintained my composure. I could well have given him a modified form of the SRK dialogue as “My name is not Khan and I am not a terrorist” but I preferred a straightforward answer and said, “It depends (on perception)”. I answered in this manner with the hope that he would ask more but he, probably, sensing my dissidence with his views shifted the conversation towards a more common theme – Tourism! I guess people from Naxal affected states of India are never asked about Naxalism neither are people from Assam asked about the ULFA insurgency nor are people from Nagaland asked about NSCN terrorism. So why me?

My next stop was my exam centre where I met a few fellow Engineering students some of whom invited me for a cup of tea whereas others were comfortable asking questions and answering some of mine for some last minute brush up of concepts just before the exam. While travelling back alone to my friends’ in an overcrowded metro I had in fellow travellers some policemen, contemporary students and some pan-stained-mouth unruly young men ogling at jeans clad girls! One has to behave as an ultra-polite person so as not to invite the uneasy glances of the elderly travellers as well as others suspecting yet another terrorist attack! One has to smile at people staring at you, seemingly till eternity, and not expecting a smile back! And I wonder similar could be the circumstances in which young Kashmiri students get picked up only to be Framed, Damned and finally Acquitted without any charge! And aptly, one of my friends who called me while I was travelling in the metro exclaimed, “Akeley!?” after I told him I was travelling alone! And at personal level, one has to be always mentally prepared to negotiate such a situation having read about many fellow Kashmiris being held on the mere basis of suspicion! And it is because I am a Kashmiri!

Blessed are you to have this life,
Blessed by the One, The Creator of life.

Full of trials, full of tribulations,
Come out trumps to gain felicitations.

Felicitations in this life, the short life,
And in the life, the everlasting life.

This life has a purpose, not in vain,
To gain peity that blessings may rain.

In the short time of this life,
Full of trials and trials, this life.

Use everything given by your Lord,
To please and please The True Lord!

Remember Him through night & day,
Don’t bark at fellows and do not bray.

Love for all and hatred for none,
Is the secret ingredient to be united & One.

Harbour for none, malice and envy,
Greet everyone with peace and harmony.

Live your life with no discord,
As decreed by The One God!

He always wants his servants be happy,
It’s only us who get scrappy!

For few days of worldly life,
We tend to mess up the eternal life.

Picking faults with others is so easy,
Bravery is sincere repentance from fallacy.

Delve in yourself, deep and deep,
Because you have a covenant to keep.

Life is a test, don’t fall asleep,
Because you have a covenant to keep.

Because you have a covenant to keep,
Because we have a covenant to keep!

The story of unsung Malalas

“Everyone is worried about stopping terrorism. Well, there really is an easy way – Stop participating in it” – Noam Chomsky

It has been more than a week since Malala Yousafzai, a 14 year old Pakistani school girl was shot in the head by gunmen while coming back from school and is now under treatment in UK. While mincing no words, this really is a dastardly act and any sane person with reasoning capabilities would agree. It is no surprise then that this cowardly act has seen condemnations pouring in from all around the world – from the US administration and from other countries and even from unexpected quarters like the ageing singer Madonna!  While as the attackers have, reportedly, rejected her going to school as the reason behind the assassination attempt insisting, rather, that she was attacked for being an America sympathizer and an Obama patroniser, I guess this act cannot be justified in anyway. However, the fact that needs to be analysed in this context is the skewed approach and the continual selectivity in the way world powers condemn acts of such magnitude or even more, depending upon who is the perpetrator and who is the victim.
I consider Malala lucky on two counts – One that she survived the assassination attempt and Second that she has the whole country (or the world) behind her, thanks to the widespread media coverage this attack received. This is not to say that media should not have given such coverage but the emphasis I want to lay is upon the fact that there are still many civilians (including girls, including children) around the world who die a silent death at the hands of the ‘unofficial’ terrorists. The following lines highlight some of these.
While Malala has been offered medical care by many countries, no one even tried to speak about the glaring acts of human rights violations perpetrated in the past, by the same people who are now offering medical aid to Malala. There was no media coverage, no lectures of democracy and freedom from the pulpits of the White House because the perpetrators on those occasions were on the other side of the line – the line demarcating separate nomenclatures for same acts performed by different people.
A few months earlier this year, in March, 17 unarmed civilians (including 7 girls and a 9 year old) were murdered by an American solider in the Panjwai district of Kandahar in Afghanistan. Even the dead bodies were not spared and were burnt.  This time around the US President did admit that the incident was “absolutely tragic” but was quick to add, “but generally we are proud of what the troops have accomplished in Afghanistan”. One wonders what is this accomplishment the US president was referring to – a war ravaged country, a lost war or a whirlpool of human rights abuses? In the Iraqi town of Haditha, in November 2005, 24 unarmed civilians were gunned down by the US marines which included seven children and a toddler. The perpetrators of this act were initially booked but are yet to be convicted, after the passage of 7 years! These acts form just the tip of the iceberg of the sponsored terrorism meted out in the name of war against terror.
What about Abeer al-Janabi, a 14 year old Iraqi girl,  who was killed along with her family members by five US marines after being sexually assaulted? The dead bodies of those killed were then burnt in order to put the blame on sectarian violence. In this case as well, the guilty are yet to face justice and the people pretending to be the harbingers of democracy, freedom & equal rights seem to be busy in condemning acts by others while patronising much more widespread and heinous acts of terrorism and injustice done by their own men. On a similar count, what about the thousands of children in various cities of Iraq who are born with defects caused due to excessive exposure to radiations as a result of the US sponsored invasion? What about the staggering number of civilian deaths arising due to the continuing drone strikes in Pakistan, Yemen & Somalia?
According to independent sources the number of civilian killings in the drone attacks in Pakistan alone is nearly 3000 which includes nearly 200 children. How many teenaged school kids were lost here without a trace? Without even the smallest mention by the big media houses which these days have dedicated prime time programs for Malala?  Tariq Aziz, a 16 year old school boy was killed along with his cousin, 12 year old Waheed Khan when a American drone hit the vehicle they were travelling in, in 2009. Tariq Aziz had only the previous Friday attended the anti-Drone conference in Islamabad. He was planning to use photography to document the drone attacks in his area. He had volunteered to help upload the pictures and was killed within 72 hours after returning home.
Similarly, in Yemen and Somalia, the number of civilian deaths as a result of drone attacks far exceeds the number of ‘terrorists’ killed. Although, the definition of ‘terrorist’ in itself is an altogether ambiguous issue! Reports suggest that the ‘success’ rate of the drone attacks in eliminating ‘terrorists’ stands at a dismal 10-15 %. As a friend aptly put it on twitter, “The attack on Malala is a national tragedy, but drone attacks are a national strategy”!
One can only wonder how the perpetrators of worst kind of institutionalised terrorism claim the moral ground to condemn acts like the attack on Malala? It is pertinent to mention here that the TTP, deemed responsible for the attack on Malala, became a dreaded force only after the US drones began to strike at will in Pakistan, killing innocent civilians in the garb of the ‘War against terror’. And then they have the audacity to blame the growth of TTP on the so called ‘radical Islam’ when, in reality, the roots of almost every terrorist act lie in their own hegemonic policies.

And we voted for you!

Rupees 482.7 lacs, reads the signboard as the ‘Project Cost’ of the road  supposed to be completed by this time. On the same road, in my village, while strolling back home from Masjid one easily enjoys the privilege which no VVIP (don’t know how many V’s to append!) in this country enjoys – the privilege of inhaling a mouthful of dust emanating from the withering road as the tippers and Chevrolets (or Marutis) zoom by! I don’t know who to blame? The government, the concerned engineering department, the executing agency, the district administration or the contractor! I guess this privilege is being selectively offered to the people of some particular areas only. The following lines are a testimony to this. Being a frequent visitor to the Summer capital, I often stare at the double or even triple black topping of the VVIP roads once such a person is expected to visit the valley. The yellow lines carefully painted along the sides of the road in order to give the VVIPs a royal feeling once they travel along with their long cavalcades (which stall every other traffic movement while they are travelling). And then coming back to my place, I sometimes feel like using my skull cap in place of a handkerchief whenever I forget to carry one to avoid the above mentioned uninvited ‘privilege’! And I wonder we were supposed to vote for this!
The autumn this year has been a pretty silent affair, at least in our part of the Valley. Partly because Kashmiris now have enough of money to outsource the harvesting work to the people from Bihar, Bengal or UP. While the labourers from outside the state do the harvesting work in the place which fetches them one of the highest wages in India, we are busy watching T20 and Bollywood, which are fetched Direct-to-Home thanks to cable TV and ever so competing DTH services. The other factor to the silence of the Autumn this year has been the absence of a proper irrigation facilities. Now, here, I may be asked to complain to God instead of the government as the rains have been irregular. But then it was not the case of irregular rains in the previous years. Lift irrigation schemes, foundation stones of which have been laid by ministers who may not even be sitting MLAs at this time, lay defunct. Further with paani, there are neighbouring villages who seem to have to wait till eternity to get a glimpse of the water tanker for fresh potable water for daily consumption. The mere sight of the water tanker sends the whole womenfolk (as well as kind men) into a tizzy with some even coming out with ‘jajeer naer’ and any other vessel capable of storing water! And for water for other purposes, it is the same old saga of women carrying pots on their heads to the neighbouring streams. I guess we were supposed to be part of the great Indian success story and we were supposed to vote for this!
Since the last time we voted for Bijli, Sadak and Pani, much water has flown down the rivers in our state giving motion to the turbines of the likes of Baglihar, Kishenganga and other power projects but the hours of curtailment for the common Kashmiri remains the same. I wonder is it the illegal hooking on power lines which the shrewd among us are adept at OR is it the ambitions of the Indian corporation which controls the prized power projects that contributes more towards the curtailment? Now that the other favoured alternative to bijli has been capped to 6 per year on subsidised rates, we are made to think and go retro or metro! Retro in the sense that there are less choices left like food cooked on chulha for a candle light dinner or metro in sense that we are going to have FDI that will bring KFCs, McDonalds with which a pizza is just a phone call away (no need to cook on our own)!
While as most of the people, even in the government, justify the elections in the context of delivering basic services like bijli, sadak and paani, the dismal delivery of such services (if not absence thereof) makes one think, “Were we supposed to vote for this”?

A ‘Kashmired’ identity!

This article first appeared in the Wednesday, 10th October edition of Daily Greater Kashmir.

It would have been just another match for majority of the people outside the Indian sub-continent and even for some living in India. But in our part of the world, it was a time for emotive redemption, vengeance and a display of the ever present extreme emotions lying buried in the heart of our hearts. Be assured, I am not going to tell you about an India Vs Pakistan cricket game!

India vs South Africa, it was! The match nearly ended in a tie. India won against the Proteas but lost to Kashmiris! All the way into the twitter and facebook social networks, timelines were filled with tweets and posts in support of the men in green (Light Green, if it wasn’t obvious) as to how they managed to lessen the margin of loss to ‘less than 30-odd runs’. The Proteas don’t claim even the remotest stake in this part of the world, the Valley of Saints. One wonders, why on earth would a major chunk of educated, tech-savvy and outspoken Kashmiris cheer (or tweet) for a country as distant as South Africa, which does even share its border with ours!
I am sure supporting (or cheering) a cricket team in a cricket match is not the barometer of determining nationality or loyalty. I even wish that it does qualify for sedition or a PSA!? For that matter,  can you call a fan of the English football team, in FIFA World Cup, a ‘firangi’ (of the pre-1947 era)!? It is, albeit, in consonance with the fact that India does not qualify for the FIFA World Cup! I suppose, for anybody, being an ‘integral’ part of a nation would naturally push him to cheer (or tweet!) for the sports of that very nation.
The result of the said match resulted in firecrackers (this time not from the CRPF!!!) from the ever so emotive Kashmiri waiting in the street with a cracker in one hand and a matchstick in the other. Another duel of vengeance after the WC ODI champions repeated the performance of Mohali Semi-final, in the preceding match. While the sabre-rattling over Kashmir was going on at the UN around the same time, the Youth of Kashmir were expressing themselves out there in the streets and the cyberways of twitter and facebook, even without an UN mandate and without the presence of any supervising agency, without even the consent of the two parties who were playing wordsmiths at the UN, of integral parts and jugular veins!
But, ask any such person who is celebrating an early Indian exit from the World Cup T20 that is he being a Pakistani by doing so? The answer would be a big , “NO”, without a second thought! Ask him how does it feel to be part of the rhetoric of integral parts and the jugular veins. The answer in most of the cases may be, “I don’t care”. Ask him how does it feel like saluting the national flag and standing upto the national anthem before the start of a match. The answer to this question may, well, be, “I don’t do that”. Ask him if he is a dropout and thus confused about his future and thus venting out his anger. The answer may be as astounding a, “I study at an IIT or a NIT or an IIM or AIIMS or AMU!” Ask him if he is unemployed (or is he in need of stipend or internship from Tata or Birla?) and that being the reason for his dissent. The answer in many of the cases will be, “I work at IOCL, NTPC, ONGC, HPCL, NHPC, BHEL, Mahindra, Tata or Airtel”. Even plum jobs don’t impose silence!
But, ask the same person who gave these answers who does he cheer for when India plays Afghanistan, Ireland, Australia, South Africa, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka or Kenya! The answer will be anything but India. Ask him , “Why?”. The answers would as contrasting as the characters of Che Guevara and Mahatma Gandhi! Finally, ask him who he is, where does he belong to, what is his identity? Answers will be, “I am a Kashmiri. I was born in Kashmir. I have lived Kashmir, seen Kashmir, and experienced Kashmir”. I don’t have an identity of my own. My identity has been ‘Kashmired’!

Glad tidings to the strangers...(A Prayer)

I see them as i greet them,
I see them as i smile at them!

In the countryside, in the city,
in the college, in the university!

The ones in whose company,
the heart is free of agony!

The people which upon them brings,
from Prophet (pbuh) glad tidings!

And i can just stare, and stare,
at the dramatic change in their...

in their lifestyle, the way they speak,
in their outlook, the way they peek!

when they speak they don't shout,
when they peek, dont seek clout!

Steadfast in piety, Imaan strong,
taking Quran & Sunnah along!

I just feel, just feel ashamed,
where i am, how they changed!

They have changed, changed for good,
the evil in me, still, steadfast stood!

And i long and i strive to part...
part away the evil from my heart!

And i pray and ask my Lord,
change my heart, Thou art God!

And i pray and ask my Lord,
change my life, Thou art God!

Aameen!

'Dhikr' - Sibghatullah

                      !وجودٴِ تراٴوِتھ موجود سُورُÙ…، ادٌِ بِھا Ùˆُوتُس لامکان

Transliteration; "Wujood traevith maujood so'rum, adde beha votus la makaa'n"

Immerse yourself in the remembrance of Thee,
impose not your Self, whatever you be!

You’ll see springs of wisdom blossom,
from the ‘living’ heart in your bosom!

A life full of Thee bestowe bliss,
you won’t find contentment amiss!

Patience, perseverance in times of adversity,
and you’re saved from a bigger calamity!

Remember the Prophet (pbuh), his perservance,
to ward off any obstacle to forbearance!

Sit with those like the ‘men of the cave’,
benefit from what Allah, to them, gave!

‘Immerse' yourself in the 'colors' of Thee,
impose not your Self, whatever you be!

As we protest...

“Muslims don’t deserve respect”. This is one of the huge numbers of responses on internet forums that have popped up after our response to the piece of garbage produced by some mindless person and directed by some senseless person. While all of us acknowledge that this is an attempt by the Zionists to demonize the Muslims and spread malice about the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) but many of us seem to support the violence which is being preperated in the name of the Prophet (peace be upon him) ‘in response’ to the video. Can we muster courage to ask ourselves the question, “Are we responding in accordance to what the Noble Prophet (peace be upon him) did when some abused him?” If the answer is No, and certainly is, we need to introspect and mend our actions so that the disservice which our actions have so far lend to our Prophet’s (peace be upon him) mission may be annulled to some extent.
Once during the lifetime of the Prophet (peace be upon him), a funeral of a Jew passed by the Prophet (peace be upon him), His eyes became moist and became somewhat sad. Upon being enquired about the reason for being sad, He replied , “Was he not a human”? The Prophet (peace be upon him) had so much sympathy for the non-believers as he was the ‘Mercy for all the worlds’. In the same pretext, can we justify the killing of Chris Stevens, US ambassador to Libya, and the inhumane way in which he was killed in the name of protecting the honour of our Prophet (peace be upon him)? By choosing the violent and outrageous way of protesting, we are only falling into the machinations of the behind-the-screen perpetrators of such blasphemous acts. And in the process, we also lose the support of the ‘like minded’ non-Muslims who would otherwise support us in condemning the blasphemous act.
In the lifetime of Prophet (peace be upon him) there were those who cursed and insulted him openly.  Ka’b bin al-Ashraf, a Jew, in Madina, used to recite defamatory poetry about him and made explicit poetry about the women of the Muslims. This was when the Prophet (peace be upon him) was the ruler, and Ka’b bin al-Ashraf was living under his authority in Madina.  But the Prophet (peace be upon him) didn’t ask his Companions to punish his neighbors, companions, or even his family members for what Ka’b bin al-Ashraf did.  Nor did he punish the representatives of his tribe, Banu an-Nadeer, or randomly target the Jews of Madina nor did he boycott their businesses.   Instead Prophet (peace be upon him), as the ruler, dealt with Ka’b bin al-Ashraf, the one who caused that harm specifically.
Given our recent history of responding to such acts of sacrilege and blasphemy, it is as easy as tempting a little kid for chocolate to instigate violent protests from us. Keeping this in mind, those hell-bent upon destroying world peace and shifting power balances find this an easy way to disrupt order and sink the Muslim world into the abyss of chaos and confusion. And guess what, it is only the Muslim countries which are affected the worst kind of violence, arson, murder & destruction in the name of religion than any other country of the world.
It is worthwhile to mention here that the ‘Arab Spring’ had somewhat destroyed the old stereotypes of Muslims dictatorships by bringing forth just rulers in countries like Tunisia & Egypt which were erstwhile ruled by corrupt dictators. Now that the new rulers in these countries were bringing to fore somewhat positive (i.e. real) facets of Islam, people came up with this movie. Now, it is not surprising to see that the same western philosophers who coined the term ‘Arab Spring’ to signify a positive change are terming the recent wave of protests as the ‘beginning of the Arab Winter’. And we are cordially (albeit unintentionally) acting as pawns in the great game of the people bent to malign the great religion – Islam.
What we are watching now is; Muslims (protestors) fighting Muslims (policemen) in Muslim regions (Pakistan, Libya, Egypt, Kashmir); the net result being loss of Muslim lives, property and above all dignity. On Friday, which is meant to be a special day to beseech Allah to send blessings upon the Prophet (peace be upon him), more than 20 people were killed in Pakistan. This in addition to the scores others killed erstwhile.  It is not that our religious heads are silent on this matter and we can blame them for all the chaos and confusion prevailing for not reaching out to the masses. They are literally ‘shouting’ but here we are, deafened by hollow slogans, unable to hear them. It is good to see Muslims, Scholars as well as common people, working their hearts out on social networks, blogs, youtube, websites asking people to adhere to the Noble ways of Prophet (peace be upon him) while ‘protesting’ against such acts of sacrilege. Messages like this are common from the Learned Scholars, “If anyone abuses the Prophets (peace be upon them), then that does not mean the Prophets are harmed due to it; rather the person (who abuses them) is harmed and he will receive the evil repercussions.” Furthermore, “Our religion is a religion of peace; our religion is a religion of goodness. Our religion prohibits assaulting others. Our religion prohibits abusing others. Our religion gives the due right to its people (whether) Muslim or non-Muslim. And that which we hold to be from our Religion is that these chaotic actions that are carried out by some of the youth do not represent the religion of Islam or the Muslim population.” The Prophet (peace be upon him) himself stressed upon the importance of learned Scholars and termed them as the “Inheritors of the Prophets, the inheritance being Knowledge (‘Ilm)”. The need of the hour is to implement the Prophet’s (peace be upon him) teachings in every sphere of our lives and even in the way we protest!

What did Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) stand for???

Given the recently released movie/video aimed at maligning the image of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), I just want to do my bit by writing down the following lines. I don’t know who the film maker is, I don’t know what is in the film, I don’t know to what extent he went in his attempt. I haven’t seen the film because the mere thought of someone maligning the image of our Prophet (peace be upon him) sends shockwaves down the spine. We, Muslims, can’t even tolerate in our hearts even if a person says that a third person said so and so about the Prophet (peace be upon him). But I am not in any way justifying violence in this regard.
                                The following lines briefly outline what the Prophet of Mercy (peace be upon him), Mercy for ALL people, stood for;

1) Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was born in 571 (AD) when the world had sunk into the deepest abyss of moral and social degradation.
2) In the pre-Islamic Arabia, Girls were killed (buried alive) for the petty reason that no one wanted to be called the father of a girl. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) alleviated the sufferings of the Girl child by declaring that anyone who raises a Girl will gain the pleasure of Allah (Almighty God) and will be granted eternal bliss after death (Heaven/Paradise).
3) In the pre-Islamic Arabia, widows were treated as a bad omen. Widow remarriage was considered a sin. As such, a woman who would become a widow would have to remain as such (helpless) for the remainder of her life. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) alleviated the sufferings of widows as the first woman whom Prophet (peace be upon him) was a 45 year old widow, Khadija (may Allah be pleased with her).
4) Women were not given the right to possess property. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) declared that anyone who usurps the rights of women will have a place in the Hellfire.
5) Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, “You must treat your women folk well. You must treat your women folk well” & “The best of you is the one who is best to his family…”
6) Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) respected all other Prophets viz. Jonah, Moses, Jesus etc. and in fact termed them as his brothers.
7) Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said that nothing counts heavier  than good manners.
8) Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said whenever you meet a friend greet him with a smile.
9) Aishah (the wife of the Prophet) narrates that Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) never struck anything with his hand; neither a woman nor a servant.
10) Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) treated everyone as if he loved him the most of all.
11) When Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) gained control of Makkah after being forced to live in Madina for many years, the people of Makkah (who had earlier afflicted harsh cruelities on the Prophet) were expecting a harsher punishment from Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). But to  the surprise of every one, he forgave everyone, even the people who had killed his beloved uncle.
12) Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was the epitome of a Peace loving person which is evident from various situations in which he even forgave those persons who attempted his assassination. The Treaty of Hudaibiya which was signed by Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) is an excellent example of Prophet Muhammad’s (peace be upon him) peace loving nature.
13) Treatment with other Religions:  Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) laid NO restrictions on the practice of other religions but did convey to them the message of Islam.
14) By his just and sympathetic treatment of sworn enemies, many of those finally accepted his message – the Divine message affirming Unity of God and the Prophethood of Muhammad (peace be upon him) i.e. The Holy Quran.

These lines were written pretty hastily. But I am sure I have succeeded to some extent conveying What Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) stood for.

Thank You for your patience!

We… the chased!

The other day I got an invite from one of my friends to ‘like’ his page on facebook. The page was related to something like ‘Kashmir Parkour Freerunning Team’. This sport was new to me and I did some research as to what it was upto. Enlightened with the basics of this comparatively new sport, I sensed that it had a huge potential in this part of the world. Atleast the ‘Freerunning’ part of the name would suggest that.
We, Kashmiris, are used to this thing for a pretty good amount of time now. Terms like chasing, running, thronging, escaping have somehow become part and parcel of our discourse. People, especially children, are chased by canines and in the subsequent freerun, they may well get entangled in the web of the wires of liberty (and freedom) also called as Concertina wires. These wires are themselves related to a different kind of freerunning and chasing. When our freerunners have nothing to do, they raise up the fists of resilience (and arrogance) and aim at the chasers who in turn chase them out of the sight. Some of those chased may even end up in the Jhelum only to be fished out at a later time. Aimed at preventing the chasers being thronged by the freerunners, these wires often cause a few hiccups in the corridors of the power where those in power have to give lengthy accounts of the procurement and budget details of these precious wires to those who are still chasing power.
Come Ramadan, our Nafs chases us to beyond the curtain Restaurants where we chase even the Satan away with our sumptuous eating. Same holds good for any ‘good’ marriage feast where the number of dishes may well exceed the strength of the Baraat. And then Eid follows. And then everyone wants to break free and chase away all the good habits which we may have acquired in the preceding month. We plan getaways which occasionally turn into escapades to death. Why? We… the chased try our hands at chasing our fellow drivers and ultimately both of us get off the track (chased into death). Long live the freerunners! Another cycle of chasing and freerunning begins here. The Hakeems of the world supposed to be at the Shafa Khanas have escaped their way into their homes for celebrating freedom (from the bondage of the ‘Blessed month’!). Finding no one to cure the off track drivers, the freerunners again raise the fists of arrogance and chase humility, brotherhood and amity away out of the sight of even the far sighted. Damaging Hospitals, Schools, Computer centres, Offices while on the free run is what we are expert at. I guess freerunning cant have a better explanation anywhere else in the world.
This doesn’t stop here. Drama continues….. The chasers (janbaaz sipahees) arrive and chase away the freerunners. Those who wont run and instead try to walk the path of truth, justice and amity…….walk! They walk  towards the four walled chambers of Disturbed Areas where Public Safety & Special Powers are of prime concern and no one give a serious think about who is trying to walk (through his life as a normal being) and who is on the run (perverted and arrogant).
We do chase dreams as well! Dreams as wild as getting Justice from the ‘highest seat of Justice’ of the largest Democracy. In the process, we find some strange companions who supposedly want to help us. They even brand our ‘Ameer-e-freerunning’ as the biggest wisher of Peace. But their actions elsewhere in the largest Democracy suggest otherwise. These octogenarian companions of ours plead cases for the oppressors, fake encounter specialists, rioters and men behind the Govt. sponsored pogroms in other parts of the world and in this part of the world, do a volte-face and behave as messiahs of peace, amity and brotherhood! Strange are the ways people toy with We… the Chased.
Keep Chasing………………………….
“Long live freerunning (‘resistance’)”. They say!

                                                                           ~~~~~~~~
Epilogue:
A group of youth went to Pahalgam on Eid eve. On their return, met an accident... few of them died and few more got injured. As the injured were rushed to hospital, the staff was out to their homes, for celebrating Eid. Result: Vandalization of the hospital building and subsequent arbitrary arrests.
            Meanwhile, a prominent lawyer of India, Ram Jethmalani has expressed his wish to represent in court various Kashmiris languishing in jails. He is the same lawyer who is representing Amit Shah, one of the preperators of the Muslim genocide of Gujarat!
                                                                           ~~~~~~~~

                                                                 Criticism is welcome!

The Last Handshake...

I try to speak,
and there is none to hear.
I try to tease,
and there is none to bear.

I try to criticize,
and there is no target!
I try to recollect,
and there is none to forget.

It was joy,
it was fun.
To meet you, know you,
all of you, one by one.

To share with you,
ice-cream and nuggets!
Rooms and assignments,
joys, sorrows & secrets.

Now that you aren’t around,
as is the course of nature.
We will be friends,
friends, for all future.

The hearts melted,
and thus spake.
It was the last meet,
the last handshake!

Insha’Allah! we’ll meet again,
with good new surprises.
With some untold secrets,
and some unkept promises.

It was the last meet,
the last handshake!

Vice President……much ado about much less

For over a month now, the tussle over the presidential election is going on. Long-time friends have turned foes & allies are pitted against each other. Despite the fact that most of the parties claim that they want the election to be consensus based and above political ‘tauntocracy’, each one of them is trying their fullest to gain political mileage from these elections. This has even led to loyalty differences within a party. An example of this is the candidature of P A Sangma who quit his party Nationalist Congress Party which is an all-weather ally of the Indian National Congress. He has now become a strong contender against his good old friend Pranab Mukherjee, the UPA nominee. On the other hand, parties like JD – (U), DMK and Trinamool Congress are waiting for the tide to turn in a particular direction to jump into the winning bandwagon.
The two major alliances, UPA and NDA, competing to be in power in the Centre are using this election as the preparing ground for the 2014 parliamentary elections. In this case the nomination of candidates assumes more importance as it can become either a precursor for the forging of new alliances. On the other hand, the nomination of a particular candidate can prove to be the alliance breaker. The best example of this is the opposition of the UPA candidate, Pranab Mukherjee, by the all-important partner in UPA – the Trinamool Congress. The presidential election may, well, be termed as indicator of the mood of the various parties before the 2014 parliamentary elections.
In the midst of all this, the election to the post of Vice President has also gained momentum with various contenders springing up for this post. The Vice President’s election which would earlier be done by consensus has now gained ground as a battle of Prestige and Honour for the different parties with each party trying to present such candidates which would prove their ‘inclusive’ and ‘secular’ image. The ruling coalition is most likely to nominate someone from the, supposedly, unrepresented sections of the population. But what remains to be seen is what really would the Vice President from the ‘unrepresented’ section of the population do good to them. The examples of previous Vice Presidents stare in anguish at those who claim to do good to these sections by electing a President or a Vice President from them. Mohammad Hamid Ansari (the incumbent), Prof. Saifuddin Soz, Dr. Farooq Abdullah & J M Lyngdoh (former Chief Election Commissioner) are some of the names doing rounds.
Talking about the Kashmiri Muslim perspective to this election, even if India does get to have a Kashmiri Muslim Vice President, I don’t think it would be of any immense good to the people of this state in particular although it may help the Centre to project a ‘secular’ and ‘inclusive’ image of itself in the international community. The post of the President in a parliamentary democracy like India is largely a ceremonial one and no concrete decision making power lies in the hands of the president, except for approving (formally) what has already been approved by the two houses of the Parliament. While observing the political hopscotch, one can clearly see the handicap of the president in taking any concrete decision on his own. Talk of the Vice President; he is way behind the President in this respect except that he can adjourn the Rajya Sabha in his own capacity for a particular time if he deems it fit. Even the Rajya Sabha is most of the times presided over by the Deputy Chairman (in absence of the Vice President). In my opinion, it would be better to have a powerful and important portfolio in the Central cabinet for a Local Politician than a post, the incumbent of which is meant for Ceremonial Foreign tours, Ceremonial receptions of foreign heads & laying of floral wreaths at Raj Gath or other Samadhis!
